What exactly is “Robocon”?
The Robot Contest (commonly known as “Robocon”) is a manufacturing competition in which students design and build robots from scratch to meet unique rules and challenges, competing to showcase their technical skills and creativity.Working within a limited budget and timeframe, participants must carry out the entire process—from defining requirements to fabricating hardware, implementing software, and conducting hands-on debugging with the actual robot—from start to finish.More than just a competition, it has evolved into a gateway to practical engineering where students gain hands-on experience in logical thinking required to control complex mechanisms and in designing modular systems resilient to problems.
What Is “ROX (Robotics Open eXchange),” Which Is Creating the Next Generation of Heat Sources?
ROX, organized by molten Corporation. is a completely new robotics competition aimed at “reviving Japan as a hardware powerhouse and creating the driving force behind that revival.” This year marks its third edition.
Its most distinctive feature is that students and engineers from sponsoring companies form a single team and build the robots while exchanging technical expertise and ideas. More than just a competition, it functions as a hands-on community that fosters a culture encouraging young people to take on challenges through co-creation that transcends diverse fields of expertise and age groups.
Participating schools included the Kagawa National College of Technology (Takuma Campus), the Kitakyushu National College of Technology, the Kumamoto National College of Technology (Kumamoto Campus), the Kumamoto National College of Technology (Yatsushiro Campus), the Matsue National College of Technology,Okayama University, Kagawa University, Kitakyushu City University, Kyushu Institute of Technology, Kyoto University of Advanced Science, Hiroshima Institute of Technology, and Fukuoka Institute of Technology—a truly impressive lineup. As expected, the competition was fierce.



Thorough Branding to Establish the Idea That “Engineers Are Cool” and Tackling the Talent Crisis
As indicated on the ROX official website, the current “shortage of hardware talent” in Japan has reached an extremely critical stage. While talented young professionals are flocking to the software and AI fields, the hardware sector—which forms the foundation of Japan’s industrial base—is perceived as “outdated and rigid,” creating an environment that is increasingly inhospitable to the development of the next generation of engineers.
To break through this current situation, Kiyofumi Tamiaki, President and CEO of molten Corporation clearly articulated the goal of sparking enthusiasm for the competition, stating, “We want to build a brand that makes young people think, ‘Being a hardware engineer is cool.’” Representatives from the sponsoring companies gathered at the venue also expressed strong support for this vision.
- FUKUSHIMA GALILEI CO.LTD. a manufacturer of commercial refrigerators and other equipment, has identified strengthening its ties with schools as an urgent priority in its recruitment of new graduates.
- OKANO VALVE MFG. CO.LTD. a manufacturer of valves for power plants, is concerned about the shortage of science and engineering talent and the lack of a spirit of challenge among young people, and strongly agreed with the need for branding that makes science and engineering students view the field as cool.
- NOK CORPORATION. a manufacturer of precision parts based in Kumamoto, also highly values this competition for its ability to allow the company to reach out to top students early on—a key factor in winning the fierce local competition for talent sparked by the arrival of a major semiconductor company (TSMC).



The Students’ Sophisticated “Product Development Philosophy” Born from Limited Constraints and Down-to-Earth Drama
The basic format for teams participating in this competition is a roster of just “about four” members. Development takes place under extremely strict resource constraints, with a “development period of about 2 to 3 months” and a “budget of around 100,000 yen.”
The development process is filled with realistic anecdotes and trial-and-error experiences unique to students.
- The team overcame a problem in which, during the prototyping stage, the shaft of the injection roller wobbled so much that it was visibly noticeable and moved around violently.
- The team worked almost all night to finish the aircraft, squeezing in the work between a packed schedule of four competitions.
- A team that managed to finish their project despite having their time cut to the absolute minimum after two of the four members were suddenly required to take a make-up exam at school.
Furthermore, while some teams encountered unexpected problems right on-site on the day of the competition, thrilling scenes unfolded in various locations where engineers demonstrated the true “on-site problem-solving skills” required of their profession—making use of the equipment and tools available at the venue to perform emergency repairs on the spot and get the teams back on the court.
The aircraft, born from these harsh conditions and hands-on field experience, embodies a sophisticated development philosophy that goes beyond mere brute force.
① Rigorous logic and a commitment to “UI/UX and maintainability”
- Under the theme of “Working Backward from the Winning Strategy,” Kyushu Institute of Technology consolidated the movements from receiving the ball to taking a shot into a single sequence, thereby logically achieving a dramatic reduction in time (completing GAME 2 in 20 seconds).
- Based on the concept of “eliminating complexity and pursuing intuitiveness,” Okayama University developed a design specifically tailored to UI/UX that allows even first-time users to understand how the system works.
- Kagawa University has achieved a balance between “maintainability and functionality” through a pluggable, modular structure that separates circuits and mechanisms, resulting in a design of exceptional simplicity, compact size, and light weight.
② “Resilience” to Overcome Past Obstacles and the Pursuit of Proprietary Technology
- Kumamoto National College of Technology (Yatsushiro Campus) developed a launch mechanism using a “constant-load spring”—the only team to do so—thereby achieving both dramatic performance and the precision required to change the angle with a single touch.
- Kagawa National College of Technology (Takuma Campus) took another shot at the motor-driven launch mechanism—which they had “given up on last year”—and successfully implemented it, achieving the capability to launch the projectile from one end of the gymnasium to the other.
- Fukuoka Institute of Technology took on the challenge of developing a three-wheeled vehicle with independent steering—a complex control system—and created a unique advantage characterized by “unmatched maneuverability and quiet operation.”
③ Elevating Craftsmanship to an Art Form (Romance and Impact)
- Kumamoto National College of Technology (Kumamoto Campus) has taken design to the extreme with a black-based body adorned with a neon-style ROX logo.
- Guided by the philosophy that “a ball flying through the air is the coolest thing of all,” Matsue National College of Technology incorporated air cylinders into its design and paid special attention to the visual presentation with a sign that shimmers in seven colors.
- The passion for turning dreams into reality electrified the venue, whether it was Hiroshima Institute of Technology, whose players could vary the power of their shots like cannon fire; Kitakyushu City University, whose players sent the ball soaring upward from the ground; or Kitakyushu National College of Technology, which boasted the longest shooting range in the tournament.



An “Interlocal” Ecosystem Connecting Engineering Students, Researchers, and Manufacturing Executives
The value of ROX extends far beyond simply creating touchpoints between companies and students.The creators responsible for the venue’s music and visuals are also co-creating this space driven by the pure impulse to “make what they want to make.” These productions—which go beyond mere functional necessity to generate emotional value—have become a new arena where engineers and creators intersect.

What left the strongest impression throughout the competition was seeing both the students and the veteran corporate engineers—who had served as mentors and guided them for several months—genuinely finding joy in the process of creating things and giving it their all.Representatives from the sponsoring companies, too, beamed at the sight of young people “genuinely enjoying the process of creating things” and expressed their hopes for the next generation, saying, “We want them to keep taking on new challenges” and “We want them to view things from a global perspective.”
While training under strict requirements and constraints is important, it is the “pure thrill of trial and error” inherent in robot competitions that serves as the greatest driving force in attracting young talent. The overwhelming passion demonstrated by “ROX 2026,” which originated in Hiroshima, is sure to bring about a significant transformation in Japan’s manufacturing industry in the years to come.
